WELL....wasn't that just a bit hard to watch in places?
Watching the two teams play fairly defensively, indeed, didn't make for the most interesting game in the world. But as others have pointed out, we're at the start of the season and trying to get a new system going, that's fair enough.
It sure as hell didn't help that the referee, Jarred Gillett, was the singularly most pedantic arse hat on the face of the earth...but, he was like that last year, dunno why I expected anything different..bring back Matthew Breeze says I
the game drew over 9K, which is a decent crowd for Stade de Mariner....not a great crowd, but a decent crowd
Traditionally our first home game we play absolute crap which drives the fence sitters away & gives them an excuse not to come for the rest of the season....so we really needed a big one this weekend!!...and when I saw that Pellegrino was off-ski and Monty and Bernie got run-on starts I was most happy...back to the diamond & 3-0 up at full time, I was thinking....clearly I was thinking wrong.
All in all, it wasn't a great game, lot of pointless bookings, now, I can understand where Pat was coming from, but, that idiot Gillett wasn't having any of it and its too early in the season to be racking up a week off for collecting yellow's he could have easily avoided by not telling the ref his a gormless numb nut
We started to play Football after we scored but the first 70 we were fairly ordinary.
Still 3 point is 3 points
Suffice it to say it was a not a huge win but it was a great win. its important to get points from our home game's, it build's team unity and confidence, and its great to get off to a good start in these short HAL seasons.
Matty Ryan, all class. The kid has it. he owned Heff and McGarry
Young Sainsbury, great game, GREAT GAME...Wilko would be proud
Rosey - still looking a bit tentative, but he moved more than he did last week v WSW
El Capitano's, Hutch & Dutch - good solid game from Pat, though I don't like seeing Dutchy get unnecessary yellows - awful as Gillet was...and Hutcho, well, Hutcho was Hutcho, he done alright I just wish he'd look were his passing sometimes
Monty, couple of poor moments but it is only his second game and it was a bit warm at kickoff also his first instinct is to clear, he was one of the reasons we weren't just over run by Perth's physicality and had some good moments, his going to get better.
Sterj - definitely not bad - but not particularly good either, I think maybe his legs are sabotaging him.... I hope he will offer more as the season move's forward
Bernie, not a great game, he fought hard in the first half, but Perth are an awkward side to play against for him and he just never got into a rhythm, but it's only his first game back after his injury.
Tommy - also struggled with being molested by Perth. Did ok, needs to get out of 1st gear more often, Perth stifled him, but, he'll be a better player for it, we just got to remember his not Musti
Duke, used his height and muscle and worked hard and was another reason Perth weren't able to just boss us off the park.
McBreen - I dont type this often BUT he was CLASS, no, he really was. Won all his 50/50's, hitting his passes, causing no end of problems AND scored the match winning goal...he stopped all the casual Mariners fans from going home thinking how boring "football is. McBreen preserved our gate for next home match.
Pellegrino, its well known I think his a donkey and his not going to change my mind with that awful touch he had early on, showed why Arnie is gonna have him as a bit player for the year
Zac Anderson got a bit of the game and got a touch and it was a good header...dump Pello and split time between Zac and Brent Griffiths says I
Two weeks in a row, and we have played defensive aggressive teams that it's very hard to produce exciting, quality, fluent football against.
Up the road to the scummer's next week...that's one match I will be watching on television, as I flat out refuse to give those mongrels any cash at any time, even more so now after I got harangued by some of "the Squadron" at Sydney's Central station on Saturday morning, stuff Newcastle jets, I hope they go broke
Seeya next time
