Grand Final...more like an AWESOME FINAL...after 8 years and a shitload of media telling us how many we missed , it seemed twice an hour EVERY FKN HOUR they were reminding us...well, WE DONE IT..
it is safe to say that the Mariners have won every grand final the Recks have been too AND on that point, much prosperity to CCM fans and fellow Bay 17 Ancient Mariners WOMBAT and OZBAGGIE for helping us out getting to the game
Well we dispatched Victory and thus the Grand Final week began...NOW, i'm with Hutcho when its said that the Premiers plate is more important than a knockout tournament at the end of the season..BUT...winning one after 4 attempts feels pretty bloody good dont it ?
Deb and me went to the fan training day at the Centre of Excellence..were among others we met Mixed Tape who did that tune to Foriegners hit called "I wanna hold the trophy"..
excellent video (that I posted on the CCM forum)...
we met a few of the boys, talked to Monty and Phil Moss and got a few more autographs for the collection and the fans got on NBN news ...
By the way...that was our grand daughter Sophi waving at the fade out ...BUT I'M NOT BOASTING (much)
it was from this point the nerves started jangling ..we saw the boys off fro Fortress Bluetongue on Saturday in the pissing rain ( thanks Tim Bailey, curse you and your accuracy)...and then on the morning of game day , we strolled over to the stadium to get our collecitve yellow and blue melons on the Today show..where Fish, calm as could be, told all and assundry that it was ours, no ifs, no buts..not even a maybe...at this point we broke into a chorus of "I wanna hold the trophy".
Went around the club to hop on the coach with the other Ancient Mariners of Bay 17, except OzBaggie..he drove down...ANYWAY....I must say the bus was quit going down ..nervous energy probably...we got to the SFS...
and while the other boys headed for the rubbity, Deb and me headed for our seats...easy 10 minute walk, crapload of red and black, but no grief.
Got to our seats and other than the mountain of yellow and blue, strangely enough there was Wanderer fans down the front of the bay 5...cant say I agree with selling opposition supporters tickets in the enemy bays ..but this is the FFA were talking about, someone is gonna have to die before those cretins wake up.
Before kickoff the boys ran over and warmed up in front of the bay...and thus began an afternoon of singing and jocularity...the bloke sitting next to us and his 2 daughters were Melbourne based Mariner fans ..good on 'em for coming up to the game
Peter Green ( who I think is a crap ref) blew time on and almost instantly we were giving Covic a hard time, Sterj shoulda got the first one, if he had booted it 3 feet sooner he woulda had one ....
it was a typical Mariners attack..everyone was lining up to score and just getting it slightly wrong...said it before, we shoulda went to the break with 3 or 4 in the bank BUT..we had to wait till the 44th minute for Zwaanje to come rocketing in and connecting with a corner kick to take us to the break 1-0 up.
The second half was slightly more pains taking, the wanderers had a go... BUT Ono-san had no one to get a ball too (that knew what to do with it anyway) and we managed to keep them out
NOW..to the ref again, lotta press about his penalty decisions WELL heres is mine as I see it, if i'm wrong correct me but this is how i saw it...the handball Pedj "did" , yes, it hit his forearm BUT there was plenty of space for a Wanderer, if they had the brains , to run in and take it back..were as the handball the Wanderers did, hell, it come off his hand , hit his leg and no one could get to it..there was your difference, in my humble anyway....
and then there was the alleged penalty that Tesco should of got against his good self...PISS OFF, the other bloke was a striker, show some nuts and don't fall over like you been shot...wank.
Anyway...back to the red and black handball...Green pointed to the spot and good ole Golden Boot himself walked up to take it...ever heard 16,000 people hold their breath at once ?...weird indeed...Macca comes barrelling in and kapow's it past the goal keeper of the year for the Mariners second and ultimately the winning goal.
One thing I must bring up is the boys who were warming up in front of us in Bay 5 ...if they had Grand Final nerves ...bloody Dukey didnt show it ..running backwards and forwards pulling faces and waving at the bay...HAHAHHAA..chucklehead.......
anyway, time was winding down and to be fair the Wanderers were having a go..BUT..so were we and we held 'em off till Green blew time and 16.000 odd Mariners fans (and the team) went batshit birko...and i'll admit to a bit of a tear ...I'm sure a lot of us who have been there since the pre-season cup of Season one and some newer loyals, went a bit weak in the knees when the whistle blew.
The bloke I felt happiest for was Hutcho...he will forever be known as the captain of the squad that won their first toilet seat..and yes, I haven't agreed with his playing style in the past..but, to a more deserving bloke it couldn't happen....I wonder if he texted Wilko saying "look what I got "...I would of ..HAHAHAHHAHA.
Outside at the bus carpark after the celebrations, a mob of mini wanderers ( like 6 y.o) chanted to me and Wombat "who are ya, who are ya "...piss funny...then I jumped in a photo their mum was taking...just so they remember forever..WHO WON THE GRAND FINAL...COYY..one of the ladie's in that WSW group said to me she changed to the Wanderers cause the Mariners couldn't win the Grand Final...bet she was feeling goofy.....also to all the Y.A who I've known since day one, Bear, Dan, Shwaddle, Fish. Adz and T..thanks for coming over and sharing a hug with Debs fave cripple...
SO...a majority of the lads flew out to Korea on Monday morning BUT they will be back in town for the ticket tape parade on Friday when Hizz-Honor the Mayor Laurie McKinna will shut down Mann St to welcome home the Grand Final winning team to the coast..BE THERE OR BE SQUARE
...for all of us that have been there since day one and those more recent. GET AMONGST IT...WALK TALL, FEEL PROUD... cause the toilet seat is coming home to GOSFORD...COYY
