MEMORABLE MARINERS: The Andre Gumprecht story

Given the uproar going recently at Mariner Central...I thought I'd start a series of blogs about great former Mariners ....and I'm starting with Gumps

The mighty Andre Gumprecht..gauranteed to bring Bay 16 and the rest of Fortress Mariner to its collective feet whenever he crossed the white line...I think its safe to say without fear of retribution or similar reprisals, that Gumps is in my top three favourite EVER Mariner players..

the other two will follow in similar homage later.

Andre came through the ranks as a junior at German club Bayer Leverkusen then moved to Lecce in Italy to compete with the worlds best players.

Andre was tagged as the next big thing in German football and delivered during his time in Europe. After seasons in the lower divisions on Germany, Andre moved to Australia, Perth in particular and played for Perth Glory in the old NSL competition.

He was an instant hit with the crowd and won a premiership with the Glory before moving to Parramatta Power where he played with several players that would soon be with him at the Central Coast Mariners when the A-League kicked off

Andre was voted as the best central midfielder by his collegues during the first year of the A-League with the Mariners, overshadowing Europe bound Nick Carle and David Carney. 'Gumps' the home town hero, played an integral role for the Mariners during his first 2 seasons.

Andre enjoys giving back to the sport that gave him so much and to this end Andre has worked hard and has been accredited with a youth and senior coaching licence by the FFA.He has also been accredited with a Fitness for Soccer Course and a Sports General Course by the FFA.

...he has run various skills schools and Soccer programs, as I type this he is apparently giving Pat a hand with the yoof squad.

He was awarded the Central Coast Mariners Members player of the year award for his 2005–06 season at the Mariners. Before he played for the Mariners he won the NSL championship with Perth Glory and then lost in the last NSL grand final with Parramatta Power before the competition became defunct.

Gumprecht played in Germany for ten years prior to joining Perth Glory in 2002. There he reached the highest level when he played in the seasons 1995–96 and 1997–98 altogether 27 matches in the second division for SG Wattenscheid 09.

Off the field Gumprecht is a real fans' favourite. He is known to come to the fans' bar after games for a few drinks and when injured watches the Mariners away games with the fans. He also runs a youth training program on the Central Coast called Soccerpro.

Gumprecht signed a one-year deal to remain with the Central Coast Mariners for the 2008–09 season after spending much of the A-League off-season on loan at NSWPL club Bankstown City Lions. At Bankstown Andre was a key antagonist in a mid-season revial for the club. He went back to the Mariners after playing 10 games for the Lions.

Gumprecht was released by the Mariners the day after their loss to Tianjin Teda, rounding off an Asian Champions League campaign to forget, where the Mariners did not win a single game.

After his release from Central Coast, Gumprecht was snapped up by New South Wales Premier League outfit Bonnyrigg White Eagles
